The beautiful Roman city of York is located about 20 miles from Hungate. Soaked in history, there are countless attractions to take in over your stay. Fairfax House is one of the finest 18th Century houses in England, or if you prefer your history a little more distant then the Jorvik Viking Centre should certainly keep you captivated. Somewhere in between the two eras in 1357 comes the Merchant Adventurer’s Hall, which is the finest building of its date and type in Europe. Continuing through the historical ages one can visit The National Railway Museum, which is the world’s largest collection of railway icons and is free to visit. Other attractions include the splendid Treasurer’s House, and the York Castle Museum, York City Art Gallery and Yorkshire Museum. From here you can also take a York Walk so as to be sure not too miss anything. York Minster is heralded as “The Largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe” and traces its roots back to the Roman occupation of Britain over 2000 years ago. Heading out of York you find the imposing Georgian mansion of Beningbrough Hall & Gardens. Outside the town you can visit the Yorkshire Air Museum.
