The black gate of Hungate House provides a short cut into town by foot. Leave your car behind for a choice of restaurants, cafes, shops and attractions.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Iconic steam engines

The busiest heritage railway in the world, with iconic steam engines and also visiting engines hauling regular services along the 24 mile scenic route through the North Yorkshire Moors from Pickering to Whitby.

On busy summer days, from the gardens of Hungate we can hear the whistle and chuff of the engines setting off from Pickering station.

Pickering’s Marketplace is bustling with independent shops and supermarkets including Co-Op, Lidl, Boots, a Post Office, Pickering Pharmacy, Thomas the Baker, Cooplands Baker, Taylors of Pickering traditional grocery shop, The Pet Store Pickering, Yorkshire Trading discount store, and a choice of local butchers. Market Day is Tuesday.

St Peter & St Paul’s Church at the top of the Marketplace is famous for its extensive medieval wall paintings – one of the most extensive collections of it’s kind in the country, painted around 1470, removed or whitewashed over during the reformation, and rediscovered in 1852.

Beck Isle Museum provides an opportunity to step back in time and explore Pickering’s fascinating history and experience what life was like in this thriving market town. This grade II listed building has a varied display of shops from the past including a barber, a blacksmith, a chemist and a hardware store. Opening times do vary throughout the year.

Pickering Castle is a 12th century fortification which has seen many uses over the centuries including a royal hunting lodge, a holiday home and a stud farm. Why not bring a picnic to enjoy in the grounds. Dog friendly, book tickets in advance on the English Heritage website.

Swim in Pickering’s Local Pool – The Ryedale Swim and Fitness Centre is a short 5 minute walk around the edge of the cricket pitch from Hungate, and all guests staying for a week or more swim for free!
