Nestled and surrounded by a patchwork of gardens, courtyards, stone walls and orchards, with a secret walled garden and private enclosed children’s playground, the cottages feel uniquely secluded and peaceful, yet convenient enough to access everything you might need within a 5 minute walk.

Through the doors of Hungate’s heavy black gate, lies the quaint and friendly market town of Pickering. The bustling Market Place, with a choice of eateries, cafes, shops and bakeries, is only a short walk away. Leave your car behind and truly get away from it all, with everything you could need on the doorstep.
Heritage / History of Hungate
A true family business is at the core of Hungate, with Hungate House and it’s original 18th century farm buildings having been connected to the Kitching family for over 400 years.
Converted into holiday cottages over 40 years ago by Mike and Sue Kitching, the next generation of Kitchings continues to care for the business today alongside our Mangers Richard and Rachel Smith, who are on hand to provide a uniquely warm and personal welcome to all our guests.
40 years of experience
Being the first established collection of holiday cottages in Pickering, and with 40 years of experience behind us, we have many happy loyal guests, some of whom have been coming to stay with us since we first opened our doors. One guest took her first steps in the orchard, and now brings her own young family to holiday at Hungate.
Consistent 4 star ratings
Our 11 cottages have been converted using the original stone of the 18th century existing farm buildings, and retain a cosy, characterful cottage feel, many with original exposed beams, stone arches and each with an open fire or log burner.
Comfortable and tasteful Neptune beds and soft furnishings compliment our traditional cottage style, with a consistent 4 star rating from Visit Britain showing our commitment to quality.
Each cottage is slightly different in layout and size, but all retain a cosy charm, with the quality and modern conveniences that one would expect.

Our Managers Richard and Rachel Smith add a truly personal touch to your Hungate experience.
Living locally in Pickering and with years of experience welcoming guests, they provide a wealth of knowledge of the area alongside a warm and personal welcome.
They can help you choose the best cottage for your particular requirements, suggest a restaurant for a Sunday roast or organise a surprise for a special occasion. For anything you might need before or during your stay, they are available.
This personal touch is something we are proud of, and something which we believe sets us apart in these days of digital communication and key safes.
During your stay you might also meet Richard and Rachel’s young daughters Lucy and Lily, not forgetting black Labrador Monty!
