There are so many easy, affordable and memorable days out right on our doorstep here at Hungate. These are five of our favourites!

1. Dalby Forest

A firm favourite with our guests, Dalby Forest is perfect for families, walkers and cyclists alike. Pack a picnic and explore the many clearly marked walking trails, or bring your bikes and tackle one of the varied cycle routes. Near the Visitor Centre you’ll also find a fantastic children’s playground and café. It’s a stress-free way to enjoy the outdoors and reconnect with nature, all just a short drive from Hungate.
All Day Car Pass: £15

2. Whitby or Scarborough Beach Day

A beach day is always a fun and affordable option, especially if you bring a picnic — although the local fish and chips can be hard to resist! Stroll along the sandy beaches or bustling harbours, and if you fancy a little history and culture, visit Whitby Abbey or Scarborough Castle.

3. Goathland

This picturesque moorland village became famous as the setting for TV’s Heartbeat and as the filming location for Hogsmeade Station in the Harry Potter films. Stop for tea and cake in one of the cosy tea rooms, or take a scenic walk down to the beautiful Mallyan Spout waterfall. You can also continue the circular route towards Beck Hole before returning along the old railway line back to Goathland.

4. Helmsley

This charming market town has something for everyone — from indulgent afternoon teas to browsing its many independent shops. Take a wander around the atmospheric ruins of Helmsley Castle or enjoy a relaxing walk through nearby Duncombe Park, which is dog friendly too.

5. Thornton-le-Dale

Just a five-minute drive from Pickering, this beautiful village is ideal for a relaxed afternoon. Enjoy an ice cream, stop by one of the welcoming pubs or tea rooms, or follow the popular two-mile circular walk. The route takes you alongside the river to the peaceful hamlet of Ellerburn before looping back along a quiet country road.
