From February 10 – February 18, 2024  the NYMR is running 2 daily excursions showcasing the Royal Scot – a visiting iconic steam locomotive built in 1927.  With services departing Pickering at 11am and 2pm every day of half term week – hop on and enjoy a round trip journey to Grosmont, taking in the beauty of the North Yorkshire Moors en route.  Pre book your tickets directly with the NYMR.  Remember as a Hungate guest you are able to claim up to the value of 1 short journey on the NYMR when you present your receipt to Rachel at the end of your stay.  Valid for holidays taken before Sept 30, 2024.

We are thrilled with our new look customer information folders which we think make an excellent addition to our cottages, providing not only information on each individual cottage, but also the local area and the wider North Yorkshire Moors .  Inside you will find a whole host of suggestions for things to do, places to visit and our top recommendations for eating establishments, both walking distance and further afield.

Moorsbus offers a really reliable and friendly service, run by volunteers.  Great for accessing the Moors and Coast if you wish to leave your car behind.  Also a good way to organise a linear walk or to get to Whitby from Pickering across the Moors on what has been called “Britain’s Most Scenic Bus Route”.

This summer your single journey won’t cost more than £2 as long as it is taken on one service number.

More steam services will be re-introduced this week although weather conditions will continue to be monitored.


The Grosmont to Whitby section will continue to be steam hauled and steam services will be introduced from June 22nd on the following:

1055 Pickering-Grosmont – Standard Service

1240 Grosmont – Pickering – Pullman Service

1410 Pickering – Grosmont – Pullman Service

1640 Grosmont – Pickering – Standard Service

It’s May Half Term already, and with the sun set to stay around, Hungate’s gardens are a perfect place to stop and enjoy a quiet moment.

Self Drive Boat Hire – York. Skipper your own small motor boat (for up to 8 people) along the Ouse River, enjoying the sights of York. Pre-book through a number of companies online.

This weekend May 20th & 21st will see the return of the Whitby Fish & Ships Festival, celebrating Whitby’s fishing heritage, and showcasing culinary skills of local and celebrity chefs. Children’s activities, live music and local produce. Should be a great day out!

Glaisdale and Danbydale Cottages are situated side by side, perfect for two families who wish to holiday together but enjoy the benefit of their own private space.

Glaisdale sleeps 5 (1 king, 1 twin, 1 single) and Danbydale sleeps 4 (1 king, 1 twin), and both cottages share exclusive access to the large enclosed orchard, with comfortable outside seating perfect for enjoying a meal on a summer evening.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway reopens for 2023 on March 27th.

New for 2023, adults pay £40 for your first journey and then benefit from FREE travel for 12 months from your date of travel.  Plus kids (0-15 years) travel for free in 2023! Explore the entire Heritage Railway for a full year for only £40 per adult.

Following a recent Visit Britain inspection, Lockton and Levisham Cottages have both been awarded a 4* Gold accommodation rating.

Lockton and Levisham both have 3 bedrooms, one ensuite, and with a separate bathroom and shower – perfect for families. Both have open plan living, kitchen and dining with open wood fires.  And both are pet friendly too!

New for this spring – we have added new Nespresso machines in Danbydale and Bransdale. These in addition to DeLonghi ground coffee machines in Hungate Garden Cottage, Levisham, Lockton, and Saltersgate and Rosedale and Bransdale.

Piglets Adventure Farm, near York – lambing, bottle feed the lambs, indoor and outdoor play

FlamingoLand, near Pickering – while the main park is closed for the season, the zoo is open for half term, with keeper talks, playgrounds and rides for younger children. 

National Centre for Birds of Prey, Duncombe Park, Helmsley – flying demonstrations every day, and entrance includes 300 acres of parklands and trails (perfect for a dog walk). 

Castle Howard  explore the grounds, and woodland paths, or visit Skelf Island Adventure Playground. The house remains closed until April 2023.

National Railway Museum , York – open all week during half term, free admission, donations welcome. Visit an extensive collection of iconic locomotives, with a variety of half term activities planned. 

Alpamare Waterpark, Scarborough – a wave pool, infinity pool and splash and play pool offer something for everyone, and thrilling slides and a wellness spa too!
